Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: HMS Victorious. DESCRIPTION: HMS Victorious was about to embark a squadron of Scimitar fighters in the Channel. First, dummy runs were made over the flight deck. (Pictures by Movietone cameraman Ken Taylor). Then, the Scimitar piloted by Commander Russell came in, and appeared to make a perfect landing. The trailing hook catched on arrester wire. But the wire broke before the plane had lost momentum. Within seconds, the Scimitar had plunged overboard. It still floated and the pilot seemed to be making efforts to open the cockpit. A helicopter had been standing by and a frogman was lowered in an attempt to rescue the trapped pilot. Rescue was very close. Then, suddenly, the plane went down. SHOTLIST: MS bridge of ship. LS Carrier. Closer same. MS pan aircraft does dummy landing. MS bridge over ship. MS pan fatal landing on ship pan to aircraft (Scimitar) in sea. Same and helicopter. MS helicopter man dangling over sea, trying to break canopy. Rescuer could not help pilot - plane sinks.
