- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: The New Smithfield. DESCRIPTION: London’s markets provide food for some 9 million people. The meat market at Smithfield is the largest in the world. Now, a span roof has been built, twenty six thousand square feet of it, to cover a new addition to the market. It will replace the old poultry market destroyed by fire in 1958. Flashback to Smithfield’s ordeal: over 2,000 firemen fought the conflagration, 2 died, trying to locate the source. Many were overcome by smoke and fumes, and it burned day and night. Now, after 4 years, the ashes and rubble are giving way to a spacious building costing nearly two million pounds. SHOTLIST: Key scene. TS lorries in yard. GV inside of market.
