Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Shrovetide Football. DESCRIPTION: In Ashbourne, Derbyshire they celebrate Shrove Tuesday with a medieval game of Football. The goal mouths are three miles apart but most of the game take place in the River Henmore with most of the villagers joining in. SHOTLIST: GV Ashbourne. MS mill. MS door opened. MS interior mill wheel (1 goalmouth). MS plaque mounted on stone. CU ditto saying ‘This Stone marks the site of the Clifton Mill’, which was one of the goals in the Shrovetide Football Game. MS shops with planks of wood across windows. MS man fixes wood across window. MS man out of shop ducks his head under wood. CU sign Shrovetide Football 2 pm - 10 pm today - Ball thrown up here. Various of man holding ball. MS ball thrown into crowd. MS men shove for ball. MS crowd. MS men shoving for ball. MS spectators. GV competitors amongst crowd. MS (2) men pushing. MS (3) men over fence. TS crowds in street. TS ball at top of crowd. TS (5) men trying to get ball. MS spectators running through street. MS (4) different competitors jump into the River Henmore. MS men walking towards ball - spectators all round banks. MS competitors along river.
