- COI synopsis: "Unlikely to be of any use to man"... the assessment of the first scientist to research silicon compounds in 1926, but in 1972 silicon rubber in thin sheets is beginning to do the work of the human lung, and is on trial in heart-lung machines which could keep a person alive for up to a month.
