- Summary
- COI synopsis: To satisfy the increasing demand for timber in a world where timber resources are decreasing, scientists in Britain are making a concerted effort to understand more about a little known subject - trees. Insecticides almost invariably have a limited life. Quite soon, insects build a resistance to each newly discovered strain. The latest drastic measure in the forester’s fight against the saw-fly larvae, which can chew their way through whole plantations, is biological warfare. They’re spraying them with a virus endemic to those insects and they have proved that the spray is safe. It will devastate whole generations of saw-flies but leave the ecology unharmed.
