- COI synopsis: New materials are developed for strength, for lightness, for cheapness or to improve industrial processes. But some materials, as we discover this week, are developed purely to increase safety. It’s the job of the liver and kidneys to rid the body of poison. But if they have to deal with too large a dose - a major infection or an overdose of drugs - they can fail, and the patient could lapse into a coma and die. A new emergency filter uses a form of carbon with a special plastic coating. It’s able to remove poison from the bloodstream and bring a patient quickly out of a coma - reducing the risk of permanent injury and death.
