- Summary
- COI synopsis: Professor Laithwaite is Professor of Heavy Electrical Engineering at Imperial College, London. Although he is experienced in all aspects of electrical engineering his speciality is linear motors. He did not invent them, but has spearheaded the awakening of world wide interest, and is the world’s leading authority on them. A linear motor is an electrical motor, which has no moving parts. The principle has been known for some time, but Professor Laithwaite has spent some years researching them, and advocatin their simplicity and effectiveness and power. Professor Laithwaite is a man of enthusiasm. He has a tremendous facility of describing the principles of a linear motor with clarity and vision, in a way to arouse excitement in an audience. And he also has a clearcut vision of the role of the engineer in today’s world, as a midwife of ideas for the benefit of mankind. "To overserve an effect at lunchtime, and think of an application by tea-time, that’s the engineers satisfaction." This film shows a meeting between interviewer Michael Smee and engineer, Professor Laithwaite.
