Summary
BFI synopsis: opening of a new school at Kelloe, Durham, mainly for miners’ children.
NCB Commentary - South-east of Durham City is the mining village of Kelloe, with its characteristic pit tip. Here a brand new school was opened recently for the local children - and that means miners’ children, by and large. 90% of these kiddies come from mining families. And the county council have down them proud.
Parents and relatives were at the opening ceremony, carried out by the Chairman of the county council. Afterwards, the kiddies were off to show their paces on the playground equipment of this £90,000 showplace.
Set in its own grounds, this school will be an eye-opener to many of the young pupils. Let’s hope the new surroundings pay dividends.
