Summary
BFI synopsis: judo at Lancashire area headquarters, Walkden.
NCB Commentary - At the Coal Board’s Area Offices at Walkden, near Manchester, it’s knocking-off time.
Jack Molyneu, an NCB scientist, opens up the darkened canteen. Club members sign in.
The mat is 18-feet square and covered with canvas.
But first the zarei, or kneeling bow.
Now starts the warming-up, for in Judo you bring additional muscles into play.
Instructor Walter Tatlock orders "pair off". This is no sentimental clinch as in dancing.
The exacting art of Judo is no respecter of sex. Boy throws girl, and girl certainly throws boy.
Schoolboy Maxwell Kerley is 12 - his father is Area Chief Scientist. Maxwell takes on all-comers - including Instructor Walter Tatlock.
Bruises and bumps are commonplace in training for proficiency in the art of Judo at the Koku Seki Kwan - Japanses for the Judo Meeting Place of the NCB - at Walkden.
And next meeting the devoted members will be back for more - with of without bruises.
