- Summary
- Rhodesian Spotlight synopsis: Highlights of the Northern Rhodesian Swimming Championships held at Broken Hill.
Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - They’re off for the 1650 yard men’s freestyle in the Northern Rhodesia Swimming Championships held at Broken Hill. Charlie Parsons set up a lead from Celliers and Durrant, and amid keen inter-club rivalry Parsons went on to win in 22 minutes 13.8 seconds.
The men’s 100 yards backstroke was expected to go to Derek Fowler, and in bringing off a hat-trick Derek Fowler proved himself the outstanding swimmer of the meeting. Winning in 63.5 seconds he set up a new Rhodesian and Northern Rhodesian record.
The women’s 220 freestyle went to the outstanding woman swimmer of the meeting - Lolly Gibson - and she too brought off a hat-trick. All three places in this race went to Roan but in covering the 220 in 2 minutes 51.8 seconds Lolly Gibson proved herself a swimmer of calibre.
The diving was not immaculate, going astrau on some of the finer points - particularly the entry into the water. Diving at all times, though, is pleasant to watch.
Mavis Beier was voted the most improved swimmer of the year, Derek Fowler the most outstanding and the meeting was dominated by Roan whose captains Lynette Marits and K. Celliers received the Inter Club trophy. - Keywords
