Summary
Many ships foundered and were driven ashore and many lives lost despite heroic work by our gallant life-boatmen. 21 year-old Major Laity swam with rope through mountainous seas to rescue the crew of French steamer "Ornais" near Penzance. Crew of the "Mystery" were saved by lifeline at Dover. 4 masted Danish schooner ashore off Cuchmere Haven.
