Using a Research Methods film club as a pedagogical approach to enhance deep reflection on key concepts

At university level, watching a movie followed by discussion with an academic has shown significant impact on students’ exam results, when compared to students who did not watch a movie or watched it without guidance (Yesildag & Bolstan, 2023). Moreover, student satisfaction with this teaching method is high; in a study with health management students, cohorts reported that this method was more catchy than traditional lecturing (ibid).
At WMG, where I teach, I am trialling a Research Methods film club as a pedagogical approach to enhance deep reflection on key concepts. For example, we explored research paradigms by watching The Matrix (1999). This playlist includes some of the film titles and clips I use in my teaching.
