Female filmmakers: non-fiction

Women still face significant discrimination in wider society, and the cultural sector has a vital role to play in advancing women’s equality.

International Women’s Day is the best global celebration of the achievements of women, and this playlist celebrates the work of women in film and television as directors, producers, and presenters.

UK documentary filmmakers like pioneer directors Ruby Grierson, Kim Longinotto, Leslee Udwin, Molly Dineen, Havana Marking, Zana Briski, Clio Barnard and others are included here, along with presenters such as Brenda Emmanus, Mary Beard and Amanda Foreman. Pakistani journalist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is represented along with the work of internationally renowned documentary directors Agnes Varda, Laura Poitras, Sarah Polley, Barbara Koppel, Kirsten Johnson and many others.
