Feminisms and Television History

Gabii Rayner and Tabby Down, with Dr Hannah Hamad, Cardiff University

Overview

Description

Delving into the BoB archives, this playlist uncovers some of the most iconic and historically significant feminist moments in British and US TV history of the past 50+ years. Its coverage ranges from the female superheroes and action heroines of the 1970s, to intersectional issues of race and sexuality such as the prevalence of the ‘lesbian death trope’ and discourses of ‘colour blindness’ in more recent 21st century examples. Anyone should be able to jump in and understand, appreciate and get involved in the playlist regardless of prior knowledge. Check out the accompanying teaching resource for class room activities to help you question and evaluate the representations of feminism over the ages.
