D-Day Remembered. Final sailing of HMS Bulwark, HMS Antrim and HMS Zulu. Loss of customers from Southampton Docks. Interview with Deputy Port Director ALF PIDDUCK, need to be more competitive to attract custom. Workforce cut by 500. Creation of Freeport [duty free zone] but disagreements making Freeport less viable. Christian burial for sailor from Mary Rose in Portsmouth Cathedral as token for all who died in her. PRINCE CHARLES opening Mary Rose Ship Hall. PRINCESS OF WALES christening ship Royal Princess. Built in Finland because British shipyards could not match cost or delivery date [according to P and O managing director ALAN LANGLEY]. TRACK 2- Portsmouth ratecapped. City Leader IAN GIBSON speaks of bitterness and bewilderment [1 of only 2 Tory councils penalised]. Bognor Football Club [non league] beats Swansea City [3rd Division] - proudest moment in history. Interview with manager JACK PEARCE over the moon. TRACK 3- GAIL AND RODNEY PEREIRA, considered to be illegal immigrants but residents of Bishops Waltham battled to prevent their deportation. In spite of efforts deportation order served, but finally revoked and Pereiras allowed to stay. Wessex Body Scanner, presented to Southampton General Hospital. One and half million pounds raised to fund it. Interview with Consultant Radiologist RICHARD BLACKIER. One of largest fund raising efforts for such equipment. One of longest running industrial disputes by teachers against low pay. Hampshire singled out for especially tough action because of PHILIP MERRIDALE, not only chairman of County Education Committee but also Leader of Employers Negotiating team nationally. Interview with PHILIP MERRIDALE justifying pay offer of 5.1 percent to teachers. Raids by young girls involving thousands of pounds on IOW at hotel and supermarket, possibly master-minded by Fagin type character. Animal Ripper, sadistic attacks on at least 8 horses in Durley, Fair Oak, Bishops Waltham area. Plague of furry caterpillars in Portsmouth. 22 workers at Havant Hypermarket win 90 thousand pounds on pools, reactions of winners. [Box 6]
