John Slater was educated at St Clement Dane’s Grammar School, and was on stage from the age of eight. He became a highly successful actor on stage, film and television was the long-standing commentator for Mining Review. In the 150th issue of the cinemagazine, he claims to have commentated for the series non-stop for 12 years - ‘150TH ISSUE’ in Mining Review 13th Year No.6 of February 1960.

On screen, he was often seen as military officers, constables and doctors, but was perhaps best known as Sgt. Stone in ‘Z Cars’ (1967-1974). He also starred in ‘Passport to Pimlico’ (1949), a role that is seen in ‘Pipeline to Pimlico’ in Mining Review 3rd Year Issue No.5 of January 1950.

Slater also has an early credit for ‘THE ELEPHANTS COME TO TOWN’ in Pathe News No.46/58 of July 1946.
