- Summary
- American invasion of the island of Okinawa. Fourteen hundred ships, including units of a British task force, were used in the operation, and more than 1500 naval aircraft were engaged before the battle was over. Jap planes tried to cover the 80,000 troops defending Okinawa, but to little avail. Terrific naval bombardment takes its effect on the island.
