Summary
Pathe synopsis: A new car-ferry to Dieppe has made Paris and the Riviera a day nearer than it was when you had to land in northern France. So what do you do - press on quickly, or linger to discover the historic charm that you’ll find around this unspoilt Norman sea-port? There’s the weekly market, for a start: Dieppe’s streets closed to traffic, and rabbits and cabbages, live turkeys, turnips and ten thousand shopping bags worth of country merchandise on sale on the pavements. And the circus - the Big Top going up in the middle of this colourful town. Dieppe is a shifting, charming place where the one-night stand reflects excitement. See the new church at St Valery which turns any fisherman’s dream into a colour rhapsody, or the church-in-a-tree which makes a fairy-tale out of a nearby village. See how the sea has carved the cliffs into sculpture you’ll never forget. And linger, again, to see the flint-workers on the beach gleaning the raw materials for modern precision industries in circumstances that are as far removed from modern life - as the unchanging Normandy sunset.
