- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: World Wide Problem - Coal. DESCRIPTION: The problem of maintaining the output of coal is as widespread as it is urgent and vital. In Canada miners in the fighting forces have been volunteering to go back in the pits. In America the mines have been troubled once again by strikes. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS Pithead, & GS of coalmine. Elevated shot of soldiers being inspected, officers hands soldiers paper, GS of Private MacDonald changing into miners clothes. GS of his home, doors open, he comes out with wife & child in arms. Kisses them goodbye. CU of the baby (VG). GS of coalmine, which shows how it is situated on the coast, it runs five miles out to sea. Underground shots of miners at work, pick axing etc., truckloads of coal moving along rail. Above ground, train-loads of coal, & GS of pithead. Library Material - back several years when the coalminers striked. Men standing idle, others who did work, protected by soldiers, trucks leave pithead loaded with coal, soldiers on same, with rifle at the ready. GS of miners with soldiers intermingled, with fixed bayonets. CU John L Lewis (US Trade Union Leader). CU & MS of Mr Ickes (US Labour leader) on board ship & entering building. GS of Roosevelt & CU at meeting. GS of miners & shots of train-loads of coal. GS of burning coke.
