Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Far East Prisoners-Of-War Return Home. DESCRIPTION: Hainan - Pictures taken in the prison on the island of Hainan show the distressing state of Allied prisoners of war. Many are too ill to come home yet and are being nursed back to health in hospitals. Singapore - Lord and Lady Louis Mountbatten make a tour of Prisoner of War and Internee Camps. Southampton - The liner "Corfu" arrives bringing 1,134 ex-prisoners home to a rousing welcome. As the men come ashore carrying their new kitbags they are handed cigarettes and a snack for the journey to the transit camp. Liverpool - The next day the "Monowai" brought more prisoners home. SHOTLIST: CUT STORY: KS GV of camp at Hainan and pan of Allied prisoners in same. Various shots of the camp, shows our men very thin, many bed-ridden, and hutments in which they had to live. Stretcher cases being placed in LCI for embarkation. Others who were healthier marching along streets. In Singapore, Lord Louis visits all POW camps, talking (silent) to prisoners, etc. accompanied by Lady Louis. Various shots of the prisoners being interviewed by Lord Louis. Southampton - The liner SS "Corfu" approaches Southampton Docks, natural sound of crowds cheering, also troops aboard ship. Troops disembarking, first ashore RAF Corporal Percy Thoms of Ewell. Interviewed by Jack Cotter. SCU of both. Various shots of prisoners disembarking, carrying their kitbags. GV table loaded with cigarettes and packets of cheese. Jack Cotter interviews several troops ground around him. At Liverpool, the SS "Monowai" liner comes alongside quay, crowded with people. Various shots of same, also men disembarking, mostly RAF personnel. Relatives (girls) embrace a soldier as he steps off ship. Prisoners (released) in trucks being taken to camps, trucks out of camera.
