- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Eve of Manifestation Demonstration to Archbishop. DESCRIPTION: The George Cross Island voted three to one for integration with Britain, but only sixty percent of the people voted and the clash between Church and State continue. SHOTLIST: Eve of Referendum in Malta and demonstration by Archbishop Gonzi. Last day of the election campaign. In picture is Mr Joseph Vassalo of the Constitutional Party, and Miss Mabel Strickland standing behind him. Also present but not seen was a delegation from Westminster - Roy Jenkins (Labour), Sir Roland Robinson (Conservative), Joseph Grimond (Labour), Mr John Briggs - Davidson (Conservative). The labour supporters are seen showing We want Integration posters. A great demonstration was held owing to Mr Mintoff’s condemning the Catholic Church. Strong forces of police were out to maintain order, while demonstrators shouted Long live the Pope, long live the Archbishop.
