Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Interview With Sir John Harding. DESCRIPTION: While in London, Sir John Harding gave an exclusive interview to Movietone’s colleague David Jacobs. SHOTLIST: Shots of Sir John Harding seated at desk talking to David Jacobs. DJ - Sir John how is the fight against terrorism going? JH - Well, were getting more and better information and as a result of that we are able to hit back at the terrorists and that process will continue. DJ - And who in fact are they terrorising? JH - They are not terrorising me nor my troops, they are really terrorising their own people. They are trying to impose their will by force on the whole of the people of Cyprus. DJ - Can you say why there are so many people detained without trial? JH - Under present conditions in Cyprus, it would be very dangerous indeed to leave at large anyone who was totally associated with the terrorists. The only people I have detained are those that have come under that heading. There isn’t always evidence to try them in a Court of Law. Their cases are reviewed regularly and if there is no good reason for keeping them in detention they are released, but I can’t have people at large in Cyprus today who would and could assist in murder and killing and intimidation. DJ - No doubt you’ll agree Sir John that the present emergency is a most unpleasant form of active service. How are the troops standing up to it? JH -* The troops are doing their jobs magnificently. It is a difficult and arduous task and sometimes unpleasant and they carry it out with patience and restraint and good humour. I feel that everyone at home, all their people have every reason to be very proud of them. And I exceptionally regard it as a very high honour to have them under my command. *Library material of troops in Cyprus shown during this section.
