- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: New Thames Tunnel. DESCRIPTION: It wasn’t until 1938 that a pilot tunnel between Purfleet and Dartford was actually completed. Now work has started again and Mr Nugent, the Minister of Transport’s Parliamentary Secretary went down 80 feet below the surface to the workings at the Dartford end, to inaugurate the scheme. The new underwater link between Kent and Essex will cost roughly £11,000,000 and should be finished within 5 years. SHOTLIST: GV Thames looking across to Purfleet. Slip pan to map of project.
