Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Ten Nation Tour - Big Test for De Gaulle. DESCRIPTION: Venezuela was the first of the ten countries on President de Gaulle’s South American Tour. A 20,000 mile journey, and a tremendous test for him. Besides the security risk, de Gaulle is making this tour against the advice of his doctors. Cities like Bogota, capital of Colombia, at an altitude of nearly 10,000 feet, could impose a severe strain on a man much younger than the President. And there are the crowds. 9,000 Colombian police were on duty to protect him from attack, possibly by members of the OAS, the French Secret Army, who sought refuge in South America after Algeria’s independence. It was the same in Quito, capital of Ecuador: the crowds, the heat and the altitude. We must admire de Gaulle, not only for his indifference to danger, but for his energy as an ambassador.
