- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Between the Towers. DESCRIPTION: It was probably one of the most inspired events ever devised - the Daily Mail Transatlantic Air Race between London’s Post Office Tower and the Empire State Building in New York. This special Movietone edition features a survey of the International entry, competing for 21 prizes amounted to £60,000. From Tina the Chimp to the record breaking Jet Pilots of the Navy and RAF, from Executive Jet businessmen to Balloonists and Solo Flyers, the race presented a cross-section of personal and team endeavour that’s never been seen on such a scale before. With the added attraction of the QEII’s Maiden Voyage to New York, this tremendous week was certainly an outstanding Prestige occasion for Britain, at a time when prestige is notably absent. The achievement of Alcock and Brown, the first to cross the Atlantic non-stop, has been commemorated, on this fiftieth anniversary, in a way those pioneer aviators could never have dreamed of!
