Summary

COI synopsis: It isn’t always a case of the bigger the better; sometimes it’s an advantage to be small. In this issue we look at the benefits of being smaller rather than larger, of using less instead of more. Controlling these insect pests - able to strip a tree of leaves in a matter of minutes - has meant attacking them with an equally heavy hand: swamping their nests with vast amounts of dangerous pesticide. Now, new and subtler ways of delivering the poison mean that the amount of chemical used can be reduced by 95%.
