- NoS Summary - Japanese women’s daily lives.
NoS synopsis: "There’s nothing elaborate about her sleeping arrangements - austere simplicity is the rule." A Japanese woman lies asleep in a room on a simple mattress. A friend opens the door to her room and wakes her up. The sliding door reveals a garden outside. The woman wraps a piece of fabric around her hair then begins to fold up her bedding. "Miss Nippon dusts in a Japanese jiffy." The two women sweep and dust the room. "Dressing is more exacting - she must wear a bow tied at the back, and shaped according to her age and social or business status - " M/S of the woman dressing in a kimono and arranging the large bow at the back. "Politeness is everything here." M/S of woman walking towards the camera in an ornamental garden. She meets another woman and they bow to each other. They then hold hands and walk off together. M/S of two Japanese women kneeling at a small low table. They play a game with small counters. M/S of five Japanese women playing string instruments whilst kneeling on the ground in a sunny room. "The Japanese are most musical - but they have their own ideas on the subject." M/S of woman playing an instrument. M/S of the women playing in unison. - Researcher Comments
