NoS Summary - harvesting maple sap in Ontario
British Pathe synopsis: M/S of group of men sitting on a cart being pulled by a horse through a snowy landscape. The horse stops and the men climb down. L/S of a snowy forest. Two men walk towards one of the trees. "Maple sap circulates just beneath the bark, so into the tree a metal spout is driven through which the sap flows." C/U of the men who drill into the trunk of the tree. C/U of the spout being inserted into the trunk. A bucket is placed under the spout then a lid placed on the bucket. "And, later on, the sap - which is a sweet clear liquid - is ready to be gathered." C/U of the sap dripping into the bucket. M/S of one of the men pouring the sap from the collecting bucket into another bucket. C/U of the bucket as sap is poured into it. L/S of group of men pouring their buckets of sap into a large container which is standing on the back of the cart. "Into the gathering tank and back to the Camp." C/U of the men pouring sap into the gathering tank. L/S of the horses pulling the cart towards the camera. "Some modern folk use tractors - looks like a new use for a "whippet" tank here..." M/S of the forest, buckets hang from several of the trees. A small tractor is driven at speed through the trees. It pulls another sap tank behind it. A man stands on the back with the tank. A bucket of sap is poured into the tank. "At the Camp the sap is boiled." M/S of man stoking furnace. Steam comes out. High angle shot of two men checking the boiling equipment. "Eventually, the syrup is drawn off and poured into tins for shipment..." C/U of syrup pouring into a bucket. A metal scoop is used to show the consistency of the syrup. C/U of a man funnelling the syrup into metal cans.
