NCB Commentary - At London’s Olympia schoolboys and schoolgirls once again find their own exhibition.
Fun and games are here in good measure, but many idustries also take the opportunity of staking their claims to the younger set.
Among them was coal with a stand which set out opportunities and prospects in Britain’s most basic industry.
Centre-piece of the Coal Board’s stand was this spectacular air-powered gimmick which held youngsters enthralled.
Coal Board apprentices showed their talents to visitors who were also encouraged to see on a television closed circuit what they would look like if they decided to don mining kit.
Careers prospects in the coal industry were seriously aired on the Coal Board’s stand.
A Mining Review camera team sounded out the apprentices.
There were glimpses into the underground and plenty of working models for boys and girls to experiment with.
This is one of the self-advancing faces of mining today working with a trepanner cutting coal.
Visitors from home and abroad gave the Anderton Shearer Loader a critical appraisal.
British mining’s new tunneling machine was on show for the first time in model form.
Most popular of all was the model cactus grab, used in shaft sinking which, if you pressed the right buttons at the right time, delivered handfuls of sweets downt the appropriate chute.
Here’s a cross section of what young visitors had to say :-
