- Summary
- Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - The Lusaka Turf Club attracts visitors from far and wide for the running of the Northern Rhodesia Derby. Many had come down from the Copper Belt to pick their fancy among the six runners. It was 7 to 2 bar one, the favourite, Alto-Ante, being offered at evens. A fashionable occasion with colour and charm, it took on a tenser note of excitement as the horses paraded for the Derby itself. All runners were well turned out especially the favourite, Alto-Ante, a gray ridden by Miss Allison Ryan. And so the field of six came under starter’s orders - the race to be run over a mile-and-a-half. A good line-up and away they go to a perfect start. The first horse to show is Persian Prince. Starting the second lap, it is Persian Prince still leading from Hucklebury with Persian Rebel, Alto-Ante, Neandra and Batum all within striking distance as they head out into the country. With 7 furlongs to go, Alto-Ante takes up the running, and the even money favourite has no difficulty in coming home a clear winner from Hucklebury and Persian Rebel. Hard lines, mate, but well ridden by Allison Ryan, Alto-Ante has proved itself the best horse in Northern Rhodesia, and today’s Derby win gains the Mopani Cup for the joint owners, Messrs Kaufaman and Witts.
