- Summary
- March of Time synopsis: The manner in which a group of small town business men saved the small American city of Manchester from industrial paralysis, when the great Amoskeag cotton mills went into bankruptcy, is told in an episode entitled "Amoskeag - Success Story", included in the latest issue of the "March of Time". At the peak of production, in 1921, the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company operated the largest mill in the U.S.A., with 5 buildings employing 17,000 of Manchester’s 76,000 populaion. Faced with competition from the South where cheap labour abounds, Amoskeag was forced into bankruptcy. The mills by order of the Federal Court were offered for auction, but Arthur Moreau, a Manchester businessman, despite stiff opposition induced the citizens of the city to buy them. In ten days the £1,000,000 necessary for the purchase was obtained, and the investors launched a national sales campaign to tempt new industries to the city. To-day with a number of diversified industries housed in the old cotton mills, Manchester is again a city of prosperity.
