Digital Learning

The Learning Machine (BBC1, 1985)

Description

Digital Learning can be conceived as any form of learning, educational practice, or knowledge development that is facilitated and/or enhanced by the application of technology. The term “digital learning” can sometimes be used interchangeably with similar terms like “online learning”, “e-learning”, and “technology-enhanced learning”. The effective use of technology is an important component in pedagogical practices that use personalised, blended, flipped, and hybrid learning approaches. The use of technology in facilitating learning and knowledge development has played a crucial role across hundreds, if not thousands, of years with the invention of the abacus, the written word, chalkboards, textbooks, micro-computers, the World Wide Web, tablets, smartphones, virtual reality, augmented reality, massive open online courses, and artificial intelligence.

This playlist is presented as a form of time machine, though the playlist might not necessarily run in a nice, smooth, sequential timeline. It might not take you where you want to go, but it will take you where you need to go, all from the comfort and security of your armchair.

Be prepared to travel back to 1985 with the introduction of the micro-computer into schools, then travel forward to the present time with concerns being raised with the advancement of artificial intelligence and its impact upon learning, teaching, and assessment. Meet trailblazers like Sir Ken Robinson, Professor Sugata Mitra, and Salman Khan who share their vision for the future of digital learning. Buckle up and enjoy the playlist.
