Actor’s Changing Face: Acting Styles in the 20th Century, The
- Synopsis
- Television arts series introduced by Sheridan Morley. John Gielgud, Dame Edith Evans, Vanessa Redgrave and Donald Sinden discuss the ways in which acting has changed in the last hundred years. There is an extract from Forbes-Robertson’s HAMLET (1913) - Gielgud believes that this is an an academic exercise and Forbes-Robertson learns from Henry Irving and Ellen Terry, Sinden thinks it is a classical performance and Dame Edith feels it is studied and ‘rather foolish’. An extract from Olivier’s OTHELLO (1965) - Gielgud believes it to be a superb interpretation where Olivier never lost sight of the character; Vanessa Redgrave does not like the interpretation and Dame Edith is impressed, but not moved, by the performance.
