Notes

Notes
The Shakespeare Centre also holds a 30min videotape recorded 29 June 1999 in which director Gregory Doran and designer Stephen Brimson Lewis discuss and explain the set model.
General
The costuming has been described as a gaudy parody of Jacobean dress. Doran made full use of the ‘Such Sweet Thunder’ score which Duke Ellington wrote to commission for the 1957 Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival.
History
The press night was postponed from 11 August to 24 August after Alan Bates withdrew from playing the title role because of ill health.
Stills
Stills from, and design notes on, the production are available on the Arts and Humanities Performing Arts Data Service (AHDS) at http://ahds.ac.uk/performingarts/collections/designing-shakespeare.htm
