Notes

General
`Simply slamming a play in modern dress doesn’t necessarily help. What we’ve done with this production is to create a world that is a combination of a classical and an Elizabethan world. When Shakespeare was writing the play, in the early 1590s, his audience was hugely influenced by the Roman world, so we decided to combine the Elizabethan with an Elizabethan view of the Roman in the design’ . [Ruari Murchison, designer. RSC website.]
History
First performance 12 September 2003. It played in repertoire until 7 November and from 2-6 December at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle upon Tyne.
