Synopsis
Radio production of the play adapted and directed by Jeremy Mortimer, starring Michael Sheen as Hamlet, Kenneth Cranham as Claudius, Juliet Stevenson as Gertrude and Ellie Beavan as Ophelia. Timothy Spall makes an appearance as the Gravedigger. The play is introduced by Richard Eyre. The music is written by Conrad Nelson who also performs together with Richard Anderson, Mark Kearns and Andrew Whitehead.

This production marks the first commission between the Open University (OU) and BBC Radio 3 and was used for the new OU course on ‘Shakespeare: Text and Performance’.
Commercially released as part of the BBC Radio collection series in 1999, cassettes and CDs of the production are available for sale from the BBC Shop (www.bbcshop.com) or through retail outlets.
History
Broadcast as part of the BBC’s Shakespeare for the New Millennium season on Radio 3, in which the BBC mounted 17 new productions of Shakespeare in the space of four years. The emphasis of the productions is on a contemporary, innovative approach. The project was done in collaboration with BBC Worldwide, who were also responsible for the commerical release.
