Synopsis
Item from BBC arts documentary series. A profile of the New York Shakespeare Festival at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park. Includes an interview with Joseph Papp and brief clips of actors George C. Scott (Shylock) and James Earl Jones (Prince of Morocco) in rehearsal for Papp’s production of The Merchant of Venice. Papp discusses the pros and cons of staging plays outdoors, his audience, the implications of producing plays for free, and his 1959 conflict with the Parks Commissioner Robert Moses over the issue of charging admission.
