Synopsis
First concert in a week’s series of BBC Radio 3 ‘Afternoon Performances’ dedicated to showcasing music written for and inspired by the works of Shakespeare and other literary authors.
The Shakespeare-related items in this episode’s playlist include: Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture (conducted by Joseph Swensen); Poem for Orchestra: Hamlet and Ophelia from William Walton’s film score for Olivier’s HAMLET (1948) as arranged by Muir Mathieson (conductor: Richard Hickox); Debussy’s incidental music for King Lear, edited for performance by Roger-Ducasse (conductor: Tadaaki Otaka); excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet (conducted by Martyn Brabbins); Symphonic Dances from Bernstein’s West Side Story. The programme is presented by Louise Fryer. The selection of concerts is played by the BBC National Orchestra Wales.
