Room of One’s Own, A
- Synopsis
- `A Room of One’s Own’ is an extended essay by Virginia Woolf. first published in 1929, and based on a series of lectures she delivered at Newnham College and Girton College, two women’s colleges at Cambridge University in 1928. The premise is that for women to write fiction they need £500 and a room of their own. At one point in the reading Woolf imagines that Shakespeare had a sister, Judith, who was equally gifted with literary genius; the circumstances of the times she argues would have prevented her from exercising that talent.
