Shameless [03/01/2006]
- Alternative title
- Shameless Series 3: New Year Special
- Synopsis
- Offbeat British television drama series created by Paul Abbott. Set in Stretford, Manchester, it follows the lives of the Chatsworth Estate’s Gallaghers, "UK’s most dysfunctional family" (Channel 4 press information). The most pronounced Shakespeare references can be found in the feature-length New Year Special. Confronted with the news that his youngest son Liam has cancer, Vernon Francis "Frank" Gallagher (Threlfall), unemployed drunk and head of the family, takes to roaming the precincts of the estate. Holding a half-empty bottle of beer in his hand, he curses his fate and quotes King Lear (IV.i.) saying: "As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods, they kill us for their sport. Fuckin’ Shakespeare, fuckin’ King Lear. He had it right ...".
