Living Paintings - A Presentation Novelty: Romeo and Juliet

Alternative title
Romeo and Juliet
Synopsis
The balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet in the Birmingham Repertory Company production directed by H.K. Ayliff and performed by John Gielgud and Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies. The set, designed by Paul Shelving, is stark with an expressionist feel emphasised by strong lighting. Romeo looks up at the balcony, Juliet throws down a long scarf which he kisses. The action, long and medium-shots, is viewed through the novelty device of a picture frame. The intertitles read "Romeo and Juliet - the very words conjure up a picture of the immortal balcony scene, when the lovers declared their passion - Romeo - John Gielgud; Juliet - Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies"
