Synopsis
Münchner Kammerspiele’s production of The Tempest directed by Stefan Pucher and televised by Peter Schönhofer for 3sat/ZDF Theaterkanal. Hildegard Schmahl is Prospero. The play is set in today’s mass entertainment industry. Pucher translates the opening shipwreck into the making of a documentary B-movie. The director is unable to believe in the humanist pathos of sublime Prospero - as his view of the world is always filtered through and coded by the media. Prospero lives out an impoverished existence as an unfulfilled upmarket zombie in the spirit of Count Dracula and the Count of Monte Christo, in a post-colonial luxury lodge where he is waited upon by his rebellious slaves Caliban and Ariel. Trinculo and Stephano are reminiscent of the British artists Gilbert and George, reliving one of their performances on black pedagogy.
