Synopsis
Feature film. Remake of the 1931 film of a sensitive student (Manuela) in an authoritarian Prussian school whose friendship with a mysterious and beautiful teacher is interpreted as lesbianism. Manuela declares her love publicly after a school play and the headmistress threatens to expel her. Manuela attempts suicide but is saved at the last moment. The school play is Romeo and Juliet, and Manuela uses the role of Romeo to declare her love for Bernberg (playing Juliet). In the more critically acclaimed 1931 version the play is Schiller’s Don Carlos.
