Soldier’s Debt, A
- Synopsis
- Radio drama by Nick Warburton. A missing 78 rpm recording of Macbeth creates a tie between three people in war-torn West Africa. Meg, recently arrived in an unnamed part of Africa, is seconded to work at a British Council library and tries to understand why Safia is so interested in finding out if an old record on loan for over a year has been returned yet. Chris is working at a camp near to the library, trying to help in the recovery of boys kidnapped and forced to become killers. He is especially intrigued by the almost catatonic child nicknamed ‘Ben’, who is obsessed with hanging on to his prized possession, an old record. Extracts from the Macbeth recording are heard throughout. The title is taken from Act 5 Scene 8 when Ross, after the death of Macbeth, says ‘Your son, my lord, has paid a soldier’s debt/ He only lived but till he was a man’
