This England
- Synopsis
- Two-part documentary in which Simon Schama argues that to understand Shakespeare we must understand how he was of his time. This episode concentrates on Henry IV and Henry VI and especially the character of Falstaff as an embodiment of England. Roger Allam and Harriet Walter (not in costume) speak speeches from Falstaff ("what is honour") and Doll Tearsheet. There are brief scenes (no sound) from Roger Allam’s Falstaff in the production for Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre directed by Dominic Dromgoole. Allam also comments on how he views the character of Falstaff. Brief contributions from Michael Boyd, David Edgar and Simon Russell Beale.
