Martin Parr’s Cutdown Hamlet at the Site of the Elizabethan Rose Theate
- Synopsis
- Martin Parr talks to Heather Neill about his production of Hamlet which is performed by four actors, over 90 minutes, at the archaeological site of the Rose Theatre, Bankside. Parr talks of the resonance of the ready made atmosphere of the unique space, the hand-held torches and minimal lighting, and his work on cutting the text with Steve Gooch. He speaks of the audience’s role in the play and why he wanted Jonathan Broadbent to play Hamlet. The final dual scene is played as a poker game. The cast is Jonathan Broadbent (Hamlet), Suzanne Marie, Liam McKenna and Jamie Sheasby. Simon Russell Beale is the voice of the Ghost which comes through the radio.

- General
- Theatrevoice is a website for audio content about British theatre, and features journalists from across the UK as well as press and practitioners from across the theatre industry. It was set up in 2003 to see if theatre could be talked about in a new way: allowing critics to be more expansive than the usual space constraints of the print media allowed. In 2008, V&A Theatre Collections and Rose Bruford College, London agreed to support the site in partnership. (http://www.theatrevoice.com/about_us/, accessed 7/2010)
