"Betwixt Tavern and Tavern"
- Alternative title
- Shakespeare and the Tabard Inn
- Synopsis
- Podcast from the Folger Shakespeare Library. Episode 28 in the series. The link between Shakespeare and Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales stems from an anecdote found in a little-known manuscript which states that Shakespeare and his friends had carved their names on the Tabard Inn. Unfortunately, the Inn burned down in the great Southwark fire of 1676, but the Shakespeare graffiti story grabs our imagination even if it was only hearsay, and that tells us something about the intense speculation about and wish for more details about the playwright’s life. Martha Carlin, professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is interviewed by Rebecca Sheir.
