- JANUARY: Roosevelt’s speech "They’re going to get it". Meeting of Roosevelt and Churchill in Casablanca. FEBRUARY: 8th Army’s entry into Tripoli. Official surrender accepted by Montgomery. MARCH: Liberation of Stalingrad. Capture of Field Marshal Paulus. APRIL: 25th anniversary of the RAF. USAAF intensified their daylight raids on Germany. MAY: Battle of the Bismarck Sea when Australian and American airmen annihilated a convoy of 22 Japanese ships. JUNE: Victory march by allied armies through Tunis, and surprise visit to North Africa by the King. JULY: Invasion of Sicily. AUGUST: German submarines sustained heavy losses, and RAF raids on enemy occupied territory were stepped up. Heavy raids also on Berlin. SEPTEMBER: Quebec Conference attended by Mr Roosevelt, Mr Churchill and Mackenzie King. Allied invasion of the Italian mainland began. It was to prove the shortest invasion in history, for on that same day came the Italian capitulation. OCTOBER: Allies occupy Naples. Repatriated POWs return home. NOVEMBER: Russian drive against the Germans. Australians advance in the jungles of New Guinea. DECEMBER: Meeting between Roosevelt, Churchill and Chiang Kai Shek at Teheran. Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin at the Tehran Conference.
