- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Under the Pole. DESCRIPTION: Nearing the ice-packs of the Arctic, the American nuclear-powered Submarine Skate submerged. A 12-day, 3,000-mile trip under the Polar regions lay ahead. The voyage, under Commander James Calvert, was of great strategic importance. Skate came up right at the North Pole itself. Here, the ashes of Sir Hubert Wilkins, the Australian explorer, were scatted over the icy wastes, in accordance with his wishes. He’d aimed to take a submarine under the Pole some 30 years ago.
