- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Record Drop. DESCRIPTION: Captain Joe Kittinger carried 155 pounds of equipment when he and the balloon went up over New Mexico. His ascent took him far above the clouds to a record height of just over 19 miles. After starting the gondola’s camera to record his fall, down he came, reaching a peak speed of 450 miles an hour.
